Men of 45 Commando up in the Afghan mountains during Operation Jacana photographed on 17 April 2002. Despite their defeat, the Taliban remained a wily and troublesome adversary that required a whole series of mopping up operations. These included Buzzard and Jacana conducted by British forces.

A temporary Royal Marine forward operating base equipped with 105mm artillery and Milan anti-tank missiles photographed in April 2002.

This young marine is taking a break during Jacana – despite the men’s high level of fitness the mountain slopes and altitude still made it very hard going. He is armed with the L86AI Light Support Weapon, at 6kg it is a third heavier than the standard SA80 assault rifle. Each eight-man infantry section is normally equipped with two LSWs.
